10 Things to Know About Facebook Ads

March 19, 20244 min read

Here are 10 things you MUST know about FACEBOOK ADS.

  1. Facebook ads work best with proven offers (offers that are already making money). You can still run ads to a new offer if you’re looking to collect some quick data, but you may not get a return on your investment.

Proven offers (like an e-commerce store with 5% conversion rate, a plumber with established clientele, or a course that’s already selling to your email list) are perfect candidates for Facebook ads.

You can run ads to a new offer, BUT there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a return on your investment. For example, if you decide to sell something like glow in the dark toilet paper, you can run the best ads around, and there may not be a market for it.

  1. Ads are an accelerant. They simply speed things up and amplify whatever is (or is not) working in your business.

Ads aren’t magic, they are just an accelerant. Running ads can speed things up and amplify whatever is (or is not) working in your business. It’s like pouring gasoline on a fire, BIG things can happen; however, if there’s no flame, no amount of gasoline will start a fire.

  1. Great Facebook ads will get you lots of traffic, but it’s up to the funnel or website to convert.

An ad’s job is to get viewers to click and move off the platform and onto into your funnel or website. Great ads will get you lots of qualified traffic, BUT unfortunately this doesn’t always translate to increased revenue.

If your ads have phenomenal CTR, but not conversions, your funnel or webpage might be where the bottleneck is. A clunky user experience or ineffective copy could be what is preventing conversions.

  1. It’s okay to use less specific targeting. The FB algorithm is extremely sophisticated. When you set your goal as conversions, it will show your ads to people most likely to convert based on their behaviors.

While there’s a time and a place for utilizing detailed targeting, it’s TOTALLY okay not to get too specific with your targeting. The algorithm is incredibly sophisticated. With good copy & creative (and the correct campaign goal), your ads will be shown to those people most likely to take action!

  1. Facebook Ads should have different campaign objectives for different levels of your funnel — cold, warm, hot.

Cold traffic is not likely to convert, so I like to use different objectives for different types of traffic. I love using engagement (specifically video views) objectives to bring new people into the funnel. Some of my other favorites are link clicks, conversions, sales, and leads.

  1. It’s super easy to retarget people who have watched your videos! You can even be specific and target based on how much of your video they watch.

One reason I specifically LOVE video views ads, is because it’s so easy to retarget. Since the lovely iOS 14 updates back in 2021, tracking hasn’t been what it used to be BUT because the data is within the platform, no cookies are needed.

  1.  Use Chrome’s “Meta Pixel Helper” extension to make sure your pixel is firing properly!

If you’re unsure if your pixel is firing properly, you can download the Meta Pixel helper as an easy way to see which events are firing on each page. It’s so important that your pixel is tracking visitors actions, even if you aren’t running ads at the moment.

  1.  ALWAYS run ads from your business ad account, NOT from your personal ad account.

Do not use your own personal ad account to run ads. Always use the Meta Business Manager and a business ad account connected to your Facebook and Instagram pages.

  1.  Make sure to check Facebook Community Guidelines. You ALWAYS want to comply to prevent your ad account from being shut down.

Though there are ways to request reviews whenever your ad account gets disabled, we all know how difficult it is to get support from Meta. So it’s way easier to just avoid the whole debacle to begin with. Make sure you read and follow Meta’s Ad Policies!

  1. Facebook ads aren’t for everyone… That’s right. I said what I said. I know that seems a little contradictory coming from a Facebook Ads manager, BUT I love you and I want you to experience success!

Please be careful with your ad spend! There are no guarantees with Facebook Ads… so don’t commit money to ad spend unless you’d be equally comfortable gambling that money at the casino. While I love Facebook ads and the results they’ve helped my clients get, they aren’t for everyone.
